Introduction
Gambling, in
general, is one of the most controversial topics nowadays. Within the growth of
Internet access in more regions from our world, social media gained more
influence in modern society, becoming one of the biggest gambling supporters
from the XXI century. This activity has spread in no time, becoming reachable
for different people who didn't have access to it. Depending on one’s point of
view, gambling will be seen as a good or bad activity.
Gambling is
popularly known as an act where you have a risk of losing money easily, hoping
to win something greater than what you might lose. The “gambling center” from
the world is Las Vegas, U.S.A., but that doesn't mean gambling can be only
found in that specific place.
Studying
about gambling will help us to understand the different reasons why this topic
causes many discussions between people, and how this activity can become a
serious problem in our daily life if we don’t know how to manage it.
Gambling and its types

Gambling is
defined as an activity in which you risk money in the hope of winning more
money if you are lucky or if you guess something correctly. It is also defined
as a situation in which you take a risk on something that can give you
important benefits.
Gambling
takes place not only in casinos, but also in situations where the outcome is
uncertain, such as football/soccer games, elections, car races and weather. Up to this days, there aren't specific criteria that must be followed in order to classify an activity as "gambling", but based on the previous mentioned characteristic, the different types of gambling can be:
- Bingo
- Blackjack
- Dice games
- Lotteries
- Poker
- Roulette and wheel games
- Betting on sporting events
- Games of personal skills
Why is gambling seen as a problem? Is it bad for society?
Gambling has been recognized as one of the most common causes of financial problems; when people try to get their money back after losing it, a list of negative consequences can appear, affecting them in the following fields:
- Work, school or other activities
- Mental or physical health
- Their reputation
- Relationships between their families and friends
Another concern about gambling is directly related to the whereabouts from the lost money (in case of gambling at casinos). It is believed that all the money goes straight to the casino owners/employees, making them "richer", while very few people realize the consequences they could face if they let their money go down the drain.
What should people do?
In this report, the main consequence that gambling can carry has been presented in order to let others know what they could face if they decide to go ahead and use part of their money to gamble.
Everybody is free to do what they please to do, keeping in mind the different aspects that could go right or wrong if they do it.
